Ford Performance Gears Up for LMDh Program in WEC
In a significant push into the Hypercar category, Ford Performance is set to debut its LMDh prototype in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027. Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance, outlined the company’s strategic approach during a recent interview, emphasizing a methodical entry into this competitive arena.
"We decided to wait for the Hypercar/GTP era to mature, ensuring we align with our broader motorsport commitments," Rushbrook stated, referencing Ford’s recent focus on global Mustang racing, off-road competitions, and electric demonstrations.
With the Ford GT program concluded, attention has shifted to the new Mustang racing initiatives, including over 20 GT3 and GT4 vehicles. Although Rushbrook acknowledged the extensive work ahead, he confirmed, "It felt right to join prototypes now, especially with regulations extending through 2029."
Key decisions are already in motion regarding the LMDh platform, chosen for its competitive advantage. "We believe we can win with LMDh and achieve valuable tech transfer," Rushbrook noted. A chassis partner is imminent, with Multimatic and ORECA emerging as leading contenders. While specifics remain under wraps, decisions have been finalized internally.
Regarding powertrain details, Rushbrook confirmed the car will utilize a V8 engine; however, whether it will be naturally aspirated or turbocharged is under consideration. Design phases are currently underway, with track testing scheduled for 2026.
Ford has selected a service provider to operate the car, seeking a "like-minded" partner likely based in Europe, given the initial focus on the WEC. Rushbrook highlighted the strategic significance of competing in a global championship, particularly at Le Mans—which Ford aims to win for a fifth time.
While the LMDh initiative aligns with Ford’s ambitions in sports car racing, Rushbrook assured that it will not interfere with ongoing efforts in the GTD PRO category. The prospect of integrating an IMSA program remains an option, contingent on future developments.
Rushbrook concluded, "This is a long-term commitment for Ford Performance. We are excited about the competition, and our legacy in endurance racing continues."
