Ferrari Clinches Hyperpole at Spa for FIA WEC Third Round
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium – In a dominant display during qualifying for the FIA World Endurance Championship, Ferrari secured a 1-2-3 sweep in the Hyperpole, setting a compelling stage for tomorrow’s race. The team’s strategic handling of tire warm-up allowed Antonio Fuoco, who claimed pole position, to maximize performance despite recent Balance of Performance adjustments that increased weight and reduced power for challengers.
“We managed the tire warm-up phase well, allowing us to maximize the car’s potential,” Fuoco stated. "But looking ahead to the race, we know it will be long and complex. Several rivals are expected to be competitive on this track."
Notably, Peugeot’s Stoffel Vandoorne qualified fourth, emphasizing the future potential of the newly resurfaced circuit. "The new tarmac has helped bring the 9X8 into the fight," Vandoorne said, acknowledging the challenge posed by the Ferraris but remaining optimistic about the podium.
Porsche Penske Motorsport and Toyota Gazoo Racing faced difficulties, with the latter’s GR010s qualifying a disappointing 15th and 16th. Driver Brendon Hartley noted, "We need to rely on others’ misfortunes. We have to maximize our race and hope for chances."
In LMGT3, AKKODIS ASP made history, securing its first-ever WEC pole position thanks to Finn Gehrsitz’s impressive performance. Team owner Jerome Policand reflected on the challenges of last season and the progress made since, stating, “We listed our weak points and worked on each one. It is paying off now.”
The stage is set for a competitive race, with Ferrari maintaining an edge but challengers eager to capitalize on any uncertainties and mistakes. As the grid settles for the third round of the season, all eyes will be on the legendary circuit.
