Tsunoda Reflects on Red Bull Departure as Hadjar Takes Seat for 2026
Yuki Tsunoda expressed dissatisfaction over losing his seat at Red Bull Racing to Isack Hadjar for the 2026 season, stating he is “pissed off” about the decision. Tsunoda will take on a reserve role next year alongside teammates Max Verstappen and the newly promoted Hadjar, while Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad will represent the Racing Bulls.
Tsunoda received confirmation of the change from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko following the Qatar Grand Prix and acknowledged the emotional weight of preparing for what could be his final race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. “Obviously, I’m disappointed. It was right after the race that I was told I’m not racing next year,” he said.
While Tsunoda is focused on maximizing his time as a reserve driver, he noted that due to contractual constraints, he has no option to compete elsewhere in 2026. “I didn’t have options… my contract didn’t allow me to talk with them,” he explained, emphasizing his commitment to Red Bull, the team where he has developed significantly.
Looking ahead, Tsunoda aims to leverage his reserve role to gain insights and prepare for future opportunities. “I’m excited to see from a different perspective… I can learn a lot of things that I never imagined,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the season, Tsunoda expressed some regret over not continuing with the junior team, describing his attachment to the newly developed car, which he feels bears his contributions. “The only regret I have is missing out on that pretty good f***ing car,” he admitted, referencing developments he’s been integral to.
Tsunoda also acknowledged personal setbacks, particularly his crash at Imola, which he considers a turning point. “The crash was very unnecessary… it made me take a back step,” he noted. Nevertheless, he emphasized his growing competitiveness, especially in the season’s second half, suggesting he was on par with Verstappen when given the same equipment.
In conclusion, Tsunoda remains proud of his progress and competitive spirit within an increasingly tight field, recognizing Verstappen’s experience but asserting his ability to catch up rapidly, showcasing his resilience and dedication for the future.
