Porsche Penske Motorsport Dominates at Sebring
Sebring, FL — Porsche Penske Motorsport continued its dominance in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with a commanding 1-2 finish at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, securing back-to-back victories in the season’s opening endurance races.
The race unfolded as the #7 Porsche 963 driven by Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Heinrich took the top spot, reaffirming Porsche’s superiority displayed during the Daytona 24 Hours in January. Following an initial lead by Action Express Racing’s Cadillac, both factory Porsche entries quickly established control over the GTP field, periodically swapping the lead while maintaining a substantial pace advantage.
Despite early setbacks—including a drive-through penalty for the #7 and front-end damage to the #6 requiring a nose replacement—the PPM pair managed to assert themselves consistently throughout the race. Their performance echoed themes from Daytona, showcasing the team’s ability to absorb pressure before clinching victory.
Nasr executed a decisive pass on teammate Kevin Estre in the race’s final phase, a move that underscored the competitive tension within the Porsche camp. “At some point, there was a call from the pit stand which was not respected,” Estre remarked, highlighting the strategic complexities at play. Nasr responded, “I can’t go into details. I’m here to race, and that’s what I did.”
This latest triumph marks Nasr’s third overall victory at Sebring and bolsters Porsche’s record to 20 wins at this venerable event. Additionally, both Porsche and Team Penske are marking significant anniversaries—75 years and 60 years, respectively—adding historical weight to this achievement.
In the wider context of the championship, Porsche Penske Motorsport is establishing an early lead with two wins from two races, putting pressure on competitors like Cadillac, which performed admirably but could not match Porsche’s pace. The #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac managed a podium finish, indicating potential for increased competition as the season progresses.
With the next challenge set for Long Beach, all eyes are on whether the rivalry can intensify against Porsche’s current momentum. For now, Porsche Penske Motorsport stands atop the GTP hierarchy, with further questions arising for the chasing pack.
