Alpine A424 Hypercar Programme Acquisition by Geely Stalled

The prospective acquisition of the Alpine A424 Hypercar programme by the Chinese automotive giant Geely is reportedly not advancing. Renault Group has confirmed that the Alpine programme will cease operations with the A424 LMDh at the conclusion of the current season, prompting various expressions of interest.

Initially, BYD was speculated to be the primary interested party; however, it has since shifted focus toward Formula One ambitions with no significant dialogue concerning the Alpine programme. In contrast, Geely appeared to be the frontrunner, engaging in multiple meetings that suggested a favorable outcome for the A424’s future.

Recent developments, however, have complicated negotiations. Sources indicate that intellectual property disputes, particularly surrounding electronics and control systems, and ongoing discussions over road car collaborations between Geely and Renault have created barriers. Additionally, an alleged valuation dispute over the programme has further diminished Geely’s interest.

While talks are still ongoing, the motorsport aspect of the discussions has effectively been ruled out, raising doubts about the A424’s viability in the competitive landscape for the 2027 season. The options available for Alpine include securing a new OEM partner or potentially sourcing private funding, a challenging endeavor given the significant financial requirements involved.

The status of Signatech remains ambiguous, with Renault holding a 49% stake but offering no public clarity on future intentions. As it stands, the likelihood of the A424s competing after the WEC season finale in Monza appears slim.

Drivers have also found themselves in a precarious situation, with many uncertain about their prospects in Hypercar racing beyond the current season, aside from Antonio Felix Da Costa, who has reportedly secured a contract for 2027 elsewhere.

As the season draws to a close, immediate clarity is needed to address the future of the A424 and its associated personnel.
