Israeli driver Robert Shwartzman is set to return to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027 after signing with Team Peugeot TotalEnergies. This move comes following a year on the sidelines after leaving PREMA in IndyCar, where his season was marred by financial issues within the team.
Shwartzman, who notably secured pole position for the 2025 Indianapolis 500, expressed a mix of disappointment and optimism. “It was a difficult season, but the pole position was something really, really unique, special,” he stated. His commitment to a new project with Peugeot was a decisive factor in his decision to transition back to the Hypercar category.
Previously, Shwartzman competed in the WEC with Ferrari in 2024, achieving a victory at Austin despite a disappointing retirement at Le Mans. His prior experience in the Hypercar category is expected to benefit Peugeot as it develops the 9X8.
“I know I can bring some experience, some knowledge to it,” Shwartzman emphasized, highlighting the potential to contribute to the car’s evolution. His discussions with Peugeot management, particularly team principal Emmanuel Esnault, reinforced his decision to join the French manufacturer, describing him as “very pushy” in encouraging his move.
Initial testing with the 2027-spec 9X8 at Portimão has shown promising results, with Shwartzman quickly adapting back to racing after over a year away. “After like 10 laps, I was the same pace as everybody,” he commented on his swift acclimatization to the car.
While Shwartzman aims to deliver strong performances for Peugeot, he remains open to further opportunities in sportscar racing, ideally in LMP2, provided it does not conflict with his primary commitments to Peugeot.
“My target is to deliver the best results possible,” he concluded, emphasizing his focus on the Peugeot project and the potential for a rewarding future in the WEC.
