Growing Competition in GT4 Category: New Entries from Porsche and Maserati
The GT4 racing category is experiencing a resurgence with the introduction of significant new models from Porsche and Maserati. As anticipation builds, both manufacturers are set to enhance competition in a class poised for evolution amidst the departure of established players like Audi and McLaren.
Porsche unveiled the 911 GT4 R ahead of the 2023 24 Hours of Spa, marking its commitment to the category with a launch planned for 2027. This model aligns closely with the 992.2-spec 911 GT3 Cup and has already made racing debuts in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie.
Shortly thereafter, Maserati showcased the Project GT4 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, signaling its return to GT4, with plans for competition in 2028. Maserati’s previous involvement includes the Trofeo Light GT4 from the category’s early years. The new machine will feature a 3-litre V6 engine and represents a strategic re-entry into a competitive field that has evolved since its initial iterations.
SRO Motorsport Group’s CEO, Stéphane Ratel, emphasized the importance of fresh entries like Maserati in revitalizing GT4, particularly as the series adapts to shifting dynamics. Currently, there are nine manufacturers registered under SRO’s GT4 Manufacturer Ranking, alongside active participation from Alpine and Lotus.
Ratel noted, “As long as we have good cars, well-serviced, that come at a competitive price, we don’t really need to have 10 different manufacturers.” His focus remains on the sustainability of the category rather than merely maximizing brand representation.
The performance landscape has shifted significantly for GT4, primarily due to the competitive rise of one-make series. Ratel pointed out that models such as the Ferrari 296 Challenge have outpaced GT3 cars at certain venues, reflecting a changing hierarchy within the racing categories.
Upcoming customer participation for the Porsche 911 GT4 R includes teams like Chazel Technologie Course, which will leverage its existing Porsche program to transition smoothly between GT4 and Porsche Cup efforts. Team manager Louis Chazel highlighted the model’s technical advantages and its role as a pathway for drivers in the Porsche pyramid.
W&S Motorsport is also making the switch from the Cayman 718 RS Clubsport to the 911 GT4 R for their 2027 campaign, utilizing extensive experience with the Porsche platform to enhance driver development.
Next year marks a significant milestone for the GT4 category, celebrating its 20th anniversary since the inaugural GT4 European Cup race in 2007. This anniversary not only underscores the growth and sustainability of the category but also positions it for future developments as it adapts to an evolving motorsports landscape.
